Want To Be More Productive and Creative? Keep A Journal

Keeping a private journal is a powerful way to increase your productivity and enhance your creativity as a blogger and internet marketer.

Two of the top bloggers highly recommend journaling and use it to maintain their peak performance levels.

Maki, in a post on DoshDosh on the "Benefits of Keeping a Private Journal", noted that:

"A private diary is tremendously powerful. It can help you to greatly improve your business or website. If you want to be a success, you need to think and act strategically. At the very least, you should keep your goals in mind in order to work towards them daily."

Maki also pointed out that studies in the medical field show that keeping a journal improves the quality of life for cancer patients.

"The key point to note is not the therapeutic effects of writing in a journal but rather the fact that regular journal keeping will influence the way you think or feel about an specific topic. If you’re an entrepreneur, blogger or marketer, reflection via a private journal will give you a fountain of ideas and initiatives to pursue."

He goes on to provide some suggestions for keeping an online journal and concludes by saying, "If you want to improve yourself or your website/business, I can’t offer a better low-cost, hassle-free solution than this."

Daniel at DailyBlogTips states, "Probably my most valuable possession as a blogger is my idea notebook/journal."

In a post highlighting the "Keys to an Effective Idea Journal", Daniel provides this personal recommendation:

"For me, the idea notebook is the cure to blogger’s block, and I know many other bloggers use the same approach, or at least a similar one. If you don’t already use a notebook or a journal to keep track of your ideas, I highly suggest that you start one as soon as you finish reading this post."

He then provides 9 great tips for maximizing the effectiveness of keeping a journal.

My Own Experience With Journaling

I have kept a daily journal for many years and it has really helped me:

  • overcome personal obstacles
  • keep track of goals
  • as an outlet for feelings and frustrations

I prefer to use the old paper and pen method.

Usually I purchase inexpensive, yet attractive, notebooks.

For me, there is something very powerful about putting pen to paper.

Every day, I try to go to a nice, quiet, and secluded place, perhaps grab a coffee, and sit and write.

This writing can take many forms:

Tip for Bloggers

I've also found that it can be very useful to write posts in my journal.

Often, I have an idea for a post, but not the time to sit at my computer and write it.

So I take my journal with me, already planning to take a break to write while I'm "out and about", and I write the post.

This is very effective because you get the opportunity to review and edit before you publish.

Do You Journal?

If so, what works for you?

If not, try it for a week or a month. You may find it will make a big difference.

    Hi Mark.
    Excellent advice.
I prefer to maintain 'todo' lists on my desktop.
I have one for every main task I have to complete, like blog posts and comments, newsletters, (new) projects, etc.
And yes, it increased productivity as you are more focused to accomplish these tasks.

@ Case - thanks Case. I find it really helps to write simple to-do lists on Notepad and focus on getting those tasks done. One day at a time.
