The Google Content Network runs ads on Google partner sites, such as Adsense ads. These used to perform so badly compared to the Search Network (ads that appear when people search for keywords) that most internet marketers did not even bother to run them.

But these days, in many markets, Content Network ads can be way more profitable than the Search Network.

To run ads on the Content Network, select the "Settings" function in a campaign, and click on the "edit" function under the sub-heading "Networks, devices, and extensions ". Click the box for "Content network".

Here is the Content Network strategy:

When you start generating sales from your Content Network ads, look at your stats and Google will actually show you the sites, by URL, that produced your sales.

When you discover a site that is consistently making sales for you, approach that site directly and ask to buy advertising.

This advertising can be a banner ad across the top of the site, or a small text ad on the side panel. The best place for your ad is near the top of the site.

Most of the owners of these sites should be more than happy to sell you advertising space because it is another income stream for them.

The important thing is to track your metrics (the statistics) to ensure that you are turning a profit.

Another point to consider when first implementing this strategy is to expect to overpay for adwords clicks at the outset. In other words, don't expect to turn an immediate profit. Your goal here is to discover the sites that produce sales for you.

Then negotiate directly with those sites and clean up!

I know how this feels.

Here's a great tip on where to begin your online marketing efforts: pay per click on Google Adwords.

I was listening to a teleseminar recently with Mike Dillard and Eben Pagan where Eben suggested that the best way to learn how to advertise on the internet is through Google Adwords.

He pointed out that this offers the opportunity to quickly learn direct response marketing methods and many of the fundamentals of internet marketing strategies.

I'd have to agree with him here.

Google Adwords will provide you:

• instant access to a huge market
• quick feedback on your peformance
• the opportunity to learn copywriting, especially for headlines
• an education in keyword research
• a chance to hone your skills through split-testing and conversion tracking

A word of caution: you could lose a lot of money if you don't take the time to review some resources before you begin.

You've probably already seen the pink warning notice on the entry page to your Google account: 

Beginning April 1st, 2008 Google will no longer allow you to post a display URL in your Google ad that is not your own websites' real domain name.

No more automatic redirects.

A lot of savvy marketers use redirects to test different domain names.

Consider these two ads:

(A)

CTR = 1.6%

(B)
Mold Help For Morons
Find out if you have a toxic mold
problem without spending a fortune!
www.GetMoldSolutions.com

….A got 1.6%.  B got 2.1%.

ONLY the URL was different. 

This technique, by the way, is one of the most powerful ways to reduce your cost per click and increase the magnetism of your website.

Across the board, URL B gets 31% more traffic for the same amount of money.

But if your website is www.GetMoldSolutions.com (your destination URL) but you also use www.StopBlackMoldNow.com  (your display URL) you'll probably get a smackdown from Google on April 1.

You can still have multiple domains but you need to do it without redirects now.  (Kevin Thompson who owns both of these domains does it correctly, by the way – without using redirects).

Pay per click marketing is a niche that is always inundated with new programs. I guess the idea that you can make tons of money by placing [tag]PPC[/tag] ads is very marketable.

The campaigns used to sell these products usually claim that all you have to do is copy the techniques used by this "guru" or "super-affiliate" and you will be in the fast lane to huge profits.

Marketers of ad spying software offer a similar promise. They claim that their product will locate profitable keywords and ads. All you then have to do is copy them and away you go. [tag]Affiliate marketing[/tag] heaven.
But are these products effective? Let's take a closer look at what these tools do.

First of all, these tools are based on a theory.

The products all provide similar data: displaying the length of time that ads run for particular keywords by other affiliates.

The theory is that if an ad has been running consistently over a period of time, say, 30 days, then it must be profitable.

This may in fact not be true for various reasons:

• the overall campaign may be profitable but since very few affiliate marketers track conversions down to the keyword level the affiliate does not know which keywords are contributing to that profit and therefore continues to run all the ads in the campaign

• many affiliate marketers continue to run campaigns that lose money because they are inefficient, inexperienced, continue hoping that the ads will suddenly start producing results, and so on

• the affiliate may have lower CPC due to a higher Quality Score. Simple spying on someone's ads and copying them does not guarantee that you will make a profit. Quality Score is influenced by many factors, the most important of which are landing pages, which you can work on to optimize. However, other factors, such as the overall history of the account, is totally out of your control.

Ad spying can be helpful in determining whether or not to enter a particular niche. If the affiliates are pulling their ads quickly, it is most likely not a profitable niche. This is a big time saver for niche research.
Another downside is that ad spying software purchases generally involve a hefty monthly fee. Personally, I think that Brad Callen's Keyword Elite does much more for less money and no monthly fees.

Pay per click advertising is one area where mistakes can prove quite costly. Literally.

Here is a brief rundown of these mistakes:

1. Forgetting to Split-Test Your Ads
2. Letting Google Retire Your Ads Without Testing: Turn the "Optimize Ad Serving" feature OFF in 'Campaign Settings'
3. Split Test for More Than Just Higher CTR: Conversion Rates and Cost per Customer are way more important than CTR.

This seems to be a formula that works for selling products because I have seen it a few times this year.

In this case the affiliate marketer is Jeremy Palmer who teamed up with Anik Singal to create an extensive product that highlights the strategies that Jeremy used to generate over $1.4 million in sales last year.

First of all, for an intelligent review of what is good and bad about the product, read Andrew Wee's "No BS Product Review of PPC Classroom".

This review is exactly what it says it is – no BS – and Andrew makes the point that he is tired of seeing so-called "reviews" posted that are actually just blurbs promoting the product itself. I'm sick of this as well.

Andrew offers an extensive rundown of the components of the course and includes his opinion regarding the potential benefits.

Here are some things that I think you need to keep in mind when looking at a product like this:

1. Jeremy Palmer won an award as the top affiliate at Commission Junction. The guy is an all-star. If you are hoping that this product will help you earn the type of commissions that he does, you will have to rise to the very top of the affiliate marketing game.
2. Rising to the top of this game involves a lot of work. I recall reading a bio of Jeremy who stated that in the beginning he often worked 20 hour days and on occasion still does. His usually puts in about 50-60 hours per week. Obviously this business is his passion. Many of you do affiliate marketing on the side and simply cannot devote the time and energy it would take for you to replicate Jeremy's success.
3. There is a steep learning curve and more work. Product and keyword research, creating ads, tracking and testing, landing pages, analytics, etc. and so on. Pay per click is an area of marketing that requires constant tracking and testing.
4. Jeremy's business is actually very sophisticated. I think he is currently running approximately 135 campaigns. I can't imagine tracking and managing this many campaigns. The product does include software that can track campaigns across various pay per click search engines. However, you cannot expect to just place some ads and sit back and collect the commissions. Far from it.
5. Jeremy's business is financially sophisticated. He grossed $1.4 million but his advertising costs were (I'm using round numbers) $560,000. Of course that makes for a terrific profit margin but right now I could not imagine trying to run a business where I was paying $10,000 per month on advertising, let alone $50,000.

Now, if your goal is to make an extra few thousand a month and you are willing to really take the time to learn and focus on pay per click marketing this could be a good product for you. That is if you don't mind paying the $497 price tag.

If you are relatively new to PPC marketing there are plenty of free resources that can help you on your way.

One I recommend is Brad Callen's "Google Adwords Made Easy", available as a free download here. This is a zipped PDF file so just download it, save it, unzip it and enjoy!

PPC Classroom may also benefit those who have already achieved a level of success with pay per click and are looking to take their business to the next level.

As far as making you a millionaire, well you have to become a real pro like Jeremy.

And that isn't easy.
